How A District Developed A Scalable AI Plan That Improved School-Wide Performance

In 2016, Fresno Unified School District (FUSD), one of the largest and most diverse districts in California, embarked on a mission to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to boost academic performance and support teachers. With a student population where 78% come from low-income households and 22% are English learners, Fresno needed a solution that could provide personalized learning at scale while addressing the unique challenges of its students.

The Personal Learning Initiative (PLI)

The district’s Personalized Learning Initiative (PLI) became the cornerstone of its AI plan. Fresno partnered with companies like Microsoft and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to integrate AI and data-driven learning analytics into classrooms. This partnership allowed them to develop an AI-powered learning platform that analyzed data from state assessments, school surveys, and app usage. The platform gave teachers real-time insights into student performance, enabling them to tailor lessons based on individual needs.

Fresno’s PLI focused on three key areas: student voice and choiceteacher collaboration, and learning analytics. The initiative was rolled out in phases, starting with 220 teachers and eventually growing to over 600 by 2018. Data showed that students in the PLI program, particularly those in middle school math, made statistically significant gains in standardized test scores. Streamlining Administrative Processes

In addition to classroom learning, Fresno Unified used AI to streamline administrative processes, such as grading and scheduling. By automating these tasks, teachers had more time for one-on-one interactions with students and more personalized lesson planning. The district also provided extensive professional development to ensure teachers were comfortable with the new technology, addressing any concerns about the implementation process.

The results were impressive. According to studies, the initiative helped close achievement gaps, particularly among traditionally disadvantaged student groups. Students in the PLI program showed a 6% improvement in math scores, and engagement levels rose significantly as students felt more connected to their learning.
